Irina: Just a street scene

It's so interesting to watch how people flirt with each other. I love being among people and, as I live in a big city, I spend hours running about my city every day. I often use city transport, do shopping or just spend time in a cafeteria with a friend. I saw a little interesting scene in the city today.

I was sitting in a central city cafe waiting for a business lunch with one of my colleagues. As I came a bit earlier, I bought a tea and took a nice quiet table near a big window looking out into a very busy area near the metro entrance. A perfect view to a very famous meeting spot opened to me through the window, and before I could realize this, I was all obsessed watching how people meet each other and communicate.

My eyes wandered around and stopped on a young man, probably a college student, who was apparently waiting for his girlfriend. He was holding a long-stemmed rose in his hand — a necessary element of a date among teenagers in my counrty. The guy looked bored and a bit upset: his face expressed nothing and his eyes were fixed on some unimportant object somewhere in front of him, but his feet were moving restlessly at the same place, as if he was dancing to a well-known popular melody. I tink his feet were freezing, as it was rather a cold day. It was funny to watch him move that way, but all of a sudden he stopped «dancing», and I immediately saw why.

At a short distance in front of him, two girls were giggling, laughing and dicsussing something. When they saw him «dance» in a funny manner, they laughed even more, and even imitated his funny movements until he noticed this.

The boy stopped «dancing» immediately, but instead of displaying embarrassment, he greeted the girls with a nod, and smiled broadly. The next second all the participants of the silent, wordless converstion were grimacing and showing funny faces to each other in a very childish way. The girls giggled and the boy smiled broadly when his face was not screwed into a new comical grimace.

None of the parties made any attempt to approach each other or to start verbal communication. I think the rose in the young man's hand played a role of a clear sign for the girls, saying: «No sense even trying; his heart is engaged». But both parties apparently enjoyed grimacing at each other and flirting with each other in a funny, exciting manner.

In a few minutes, the boy stopped grimacing all of a sudden — the same suddenly as when he stopped his funny «dance» a few minutes before. His eyes looked somewhere to the metro exit and the next second I could see his girl coming up to him. His look concentrated on her, as if there was no communication with the girls at all. What's amazing is that the two firls immediately did the same — out of some funny solidarity with the boy — they pretended not to know him and paid no attention at him at all!

Well, the next minute the boy was giving his lady the rose, and the two girls turned their backs to the street and continued to chat about something with the same enthusiasm as a few minutes ago, when they were grimacing with a stranger boy. The episode was over.

I was happy to become an incidental witness of the scene.
