According to annual state statistics report announced by Ukrainian Minister of Justice, the number of marriages and divorces in Ukraine this year has decreased, compared with the previous year. In 2008, marriage registration offices registered 321,992 marriages, which is almost 25% less than in 2007.

Marriage and divorce rates in Ukraine are changing annuallyThe number of divorces in the leap year has also decreased, from nearly 178 thousand in 2007, to 166,836 in 2008, as announced by press-service of the Ministry of Justice. Reduction in number of marriages is regarded as a traditional situation for leap years. For comparison, in the leap year 2004, there were 26% fewer entries made into the marriage registers all ofer Ukraine than in the year 2003. The experts explain this reduction with traditional beliefs that leap years bring hardships into life of people, and it is a bad sign to marry on a leap year. The marriage-divorce ratio varies in different regions (oblasts) of Ukraine. Zakarpatska oblast opens the list of 2008, with 3 marriages registered versus each divorce. It is followed by Vinnitsa, Volyn, Iivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Ternopil, Khmelnitsky regions, where 2 and more marriages were registered versus each divorce. The worst situation with divorces has been registered in Lugansk, Donetsk, Nikolaev and Dnepropetrovsk oblasts, where statistics has demonstrated 1,5 - 1,7 marriages for each divorce.

Marriage and divorce statistics in Ukraine has been equally circuitous for yearsThe marriage-divorce ratio in Ukraine is indirectly connected with lifestyle and life standards of cisitens. The Western oblasts, which are more agricultural and rural, still bear old-style traditions of living in private houses, having a stable hard-working family and cultivating land, where each family member is needed as a contributor to the family well-being.
The industrial oblasts of the East are more urban. Most of people are concentrated in multi-million cities, where families tend to live in multi-storey apartment buildings. Because of low standards of life, buying real estate, and even renting homes is practically ipossible for majority of citizens. This may influence people's decisions about marriages and divorces. At the same time, the old tradition of living under the same roof with parents and children/grandchildren, when 3 or 4 generations of the family live in a home of 2-3 rooms, may become a strong factor causing divorces between couples.
Traditional lifestyles are being influenced by innovative tendencies of life in the 21-st century. The year 2009 will probably lay foundation for new family style traditions, which will be followed by changes in marriage-divorce statistics. This will become clear by the end of this year.
